Grok Bot vs Grok vs ChatGPT: what's the difference?
In short
Grok Bot, Grok and ChatGPT explained side by side for beginners: chatbots that answer versus Bots that do the work, plus how Grok Bot relates to Cursor.
Google's suggestions for "Grok Bot vs" are full of names: ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Cowork, Hermes, OpenClaw, Codex and more. If you're new to all this, that list alone is enough to make your head spin. So I'll keep this simple and stick to what I can actually stand behind.
The big idea: answering versus doing
Almost every AI product falls into one of two camps.
Chat assistants answer. You ask a question, they write a reply, and then you go and do the work. The regular Grok chat app and ChatGPT are mainly in this camp.
Agents do. You hand over a task, and they go and carry it out, using a computer, websites and apps. Grok Bot is in this camp. Each Bot has its own computer in the cloud, so it can sign in to websites (with your help), click through them, download files and finish the job inside the real tool.
The company's product lead described it as the difference between "90% done and 100% done." A chatbot gets you 90% of the way, with instructions. A Bot tries to hand you the finished thing.
Grok Bot vs Grok
These get mixed up constantly, because the names are so close.
- Grok is the chat assistant from the same company. You talk to it, it answers.
- Grok Bot is a separate app where you create Bots that work on their own computer and keep going when you close your laptop.
They're connected, though. On The X Subscription, your usage comes from one weekly pool shared across Grok, Cursor and Grok Bot. And if you have a Tesla with the right setup, Grok in the car can hand tasks over to Grok Bot.
Grok Bot vs ChatGPT
ChatGPT is best known as a chat assistant, so the same comparison applies. If you want help writing, explaining or brainstorming, a chat assistant is quick and simple. If you want something done on websites over a period of time, like checking prices on five stores or watching for an item to come up for sale, that's what Grok Bot is built for.
The Verge's launch coverage listed OpenAI's ChatGPT Work, Anthropic's Claude Cowork and Microsoft's Copilot Tasks as Grok Bot's main competitors. Those are the agent-style products from other companies. I haven't tested them side by side for a beginner audience, so I'm not going to tell you one is better. They change too fast for that kind of claim to stay true for long anyway.
What is Grok Bot "in Cursor"?
People search this because Grok Bot signs you in with a Cursor account. Cursor is the company that runs the computers your Bots work on, and it's part of the same group as the company behind Grok. You don't need to use Cursor's coding tools at all. A paid Cursor plan is just one of the older ways to get access to Grok Bot.
Don't confuse Grok Bot with Cursor's "Bugbot," which is a separate tool for reviewing computer code.
What Grok Bot does well
From the reviews and posts I read while writing the book:
- Easy setup. You set it up by messaging it. No programming.
- It finishes jobs instead of only giving you instructions.
- It works on websites that have no special connection, by using them the way a person would.
- It keeps working with the laptop closed, and the phone app is a full app, not just a viewer.
- Bots can work together in group chats and hand work to each other.
Where it falls short
- Usage limits aren't published as numbers and often run out faster than expected. See my usage limits guide.
- It's a beta, so some days are buggier than others.
- It can be slow, because it's working through real web pages.
- You can't pick the AI model. The app picks it for you, and the company doesn't commit to which one.
- Websites can block it, and it hands you the sign-in or puzzle step.
Which should a beginner use?
Honestly, many people use both kinds. A chat assistant for quick questions, and Grok Bot for jobs that take clicking around. If you're just curious about AI and want to ask questions, a chat assistant is a gentler start. If you have actual chores on a computer you'd like to hand off, Grok Bot is worth trying, starting with the free trial.
