The Grok Bot free trial: how it works and how to cancel

By Shane M · · 4 min read

In short

The Grok Bot free trial is a usage credit with a 7-day window, not a set number of days. Here's the catch, how to make it last, and how to cancel.

People search "Grok Bot free," "Grok Bot free trial" and "Grok Bot cancel trial" a lot, so here's everything I know about it in one place. The short version: there is a free trial, it's a bit different from most, and if you're not careful you can burn through it in one go.

It's credit, not days

Most free trials give you a set number of days. This one gives you a set amount of work.

The official help page describes it as "a usage credit rather than a set number of days, though a 7-day window also applies." In plain terms, you get a fixed amount of credit and up to 7 days to use it. The trial ends when either one runs out, whichever comes first.

The credit gets used up by how much work your Bots do, not by how many messages you send. A short question uses very little. A long job, like researching twenty websites, uses a lot.

The catch

The help page says a big or long job "can use most or all of it at once," and that used trial credit "is not restored or topped up."

So if your very first request is something huge, like "go through my whole inbox and organize everything," the trial can be over before you've had a chance to look around. I've read plenty of posts from people who did exactly that.

How to make your trial last

  1. Start with a small, clearly described job. Attaching one document and asking for a five-bullet summary is perfect.
  2. Check how much credit you have left on the plan screen before you try anything bigger.
  3. Avoid jobs that make the Bot visit lots of websites until you've seen how much a small job uses.
  4. Don't set up routines (scheduled jobs) during the trial. They keep running and using credit while you're not watching.

Good news: it doesn't turn into a paid plan

The help page says the trial "never becomes a paid plan" on its own, and there's no charge to cancel it. That's unusual and genuinely nice.

I couldn't find an official page that says whether new X Subscription sign-ups get this trial, so check your plan screen when you sign up rather than counting on it.

How to cancel the Grok Bot free trial

  1. Open the plan screen in the app (Settings, then Usage & Billing).
  2. Choose "Cancel Trial."
  3. Confirm.

The help page says Cancel Trial only shows up on free-plan accounts. If you're already on a paid plan, the trial just ends on its own and there's nothing to cancel.

Be aware that canceling removes whatever credit you have left, and you can't claim the trial again. So if you're not sure, it doesn't hurt to just let it run out on its own.

Watch out for the App Store trial

To cancel an Apple subscription on your iPhone: open Settings, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions, and choose the one you want to cancel. The help pages say Android has no in-app trial.

If you paid through Apple or Google, you cancel and ask for refunds through them, not through Grok Bot.

What happens when the trial ends?

Your Bots stop doing work until you pick a paid plan. When I checked, the plans that include Grok Bot started at $30 USD a month. See my pricing guide for the full list and which one I'd choose.

Is there a free alternative?

People search for this too. I'm not going to point you to unofficial "free Grok Bot" downloads, because the ones I've seen promoted aren't from the company, and installing them is a good way to end up with something harmful on your computer. If it isn't from x.ai/bot, the App Store (developer X Corp.) or Google Play, I'd steer clear.

Chapter 3 of my book walks through the trial, the plans and installing, and Chapter 4 covers your first conversation so your trial goes on things that matter. Read Chapter 1 free or get the full guide.

Questions people ask

How long is the Grok Bot free trial?

It's a set amount of usage credit with a 7-day window. It ends when you use up the credit or the 7 days pass, whichever comes first.

Will I be charged after the free trial?

Not for the trial from Grok Bot itself. The help page says it never becomes a paid plan. An Apple App Store trial is different and does turn into a paid subscription unless you cancel.

How do I cancel the Grok Bot trial?

Choose "Cancel Trial" on the plan screen. Canceling removes any credit you have left and you can't claim the trial again.

Why did my trial run out so fast?

Big or long jobs can use most or all of the credit at once. Start with small jobs and check your remaining credit before trying anything bigger.
