How I run my business with Bots

How I use a Grok Bot to look after my website's SEO

By Shane M · · 2 min read

In short

How my SEO Bot audits pages, suggests better titles and descriptions, keeps the sitemap tidy and sends every change to a preview first, plus the rules that keep it safe.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the slow, fiddly work of helping search engines understand your pages. It's exactly the kind of repeat work a Bot is good at, as long as you keep it on a short leash.

What my SEO Bot does

  • Reads my pages and flags missing or weak titles, descriptions and headings.
  • Suggests clearer page titles for pages that show up in search but rarely get clicked.
  • Checks that the sitemap lists every page and that links aren't broken.
  • Adds structured data, the small labels that tell search engines "this is an article" or "this is a book".
  • Writes up each change in a short list so I can see what it wants to do and why.

What it never does on its own

It never publishes. It writes its suggestions down, a separate website Bot builds them on a preview copy, and I approve before anything goes live. It never invents numbers, and if it cites a fact it links the source.

How to set one up

  1. Make a new Bot and call it something like SEO Assistant.
  2. Tell it which site it looks after and that its job is suggestions, not publishing.
  3. Ask for a first audit of your five most important pages.
  4. Read the list. Approve the fixes you agree with, one batch at a time.
  5. When the audits are useful, save the method as a skill and run it on a weekly routine.

A starting instruction

You can start with this and edit it: "You are my SEO assistant for my website. Audit the pages I give you for titles, descriptions, headings, internal links, sitemap and structured data. Give me a numbered list of suggested changes with a one-line reason each. Do not change or publish anything. Do not invent statistics."

Questions people ask

Will an SEO Bot get me to the top of Google?

No one can promise that. A Bot handles the basics reliably, which is most of what a small site needs.
